“A dog wants to belong. A dog wants to belong to a pack, and it’ll do what it has to do in order to eat and survive and stay warm, and they don’t leave your side. They do what they do. Each dog has a job. Some, you know, have different jobs [than] others. I have a job. You know, I see myself very similar to a dog. That sounds so weird? [Laughs.] I fucking love dogs, okay? I love dogs. You know what I mean?
Since you were a kid?
Yeah, since I was a kid. My son, and my dogs, and my wife, and that’s the way it is. And my work — like a dog.” (x)

I like to be other people, not me. And when you’re on the red carpet, it’s like, ‘Here’s Tom Hardy.’ I don’t want to be me. That’s why I play other people.

On playing a major villain in a franchise for the first time:
Is it really good fun to play and sink your teeth into a villain like Shinzon?
Absolutely. Having said that it comes with its practicalities as well. It’s one thing to see something on the page and get very, very excited; everything’s so much better when you’re on your own in front of the bathroom mirror.
The practicalities were I’ve never been to Hollywood before, never worked on a franchise like this, and I’m relatively inexperienced to be honest. So I was terrified of failure. (x)
